IH4FUTURE – Material culture, scientific culture: industrial heritage for the future

PTDC/FIS-AQM/30292/2017

IH4Future considers the scientific study of the Vale de Milhaços Gunpowder Factory (VMGF), namely the material characterisation of 30 representative equipment.

Starting Date: jul 2018

Number of Partners: 6

Total Budget: 205K€

IH4Future considers the scientific study of the Vale de Milhaços Gunpowder Factory (VMGF), namely the material characterisation of 30 representative equipment.

For this purpose, metallic alloys, lubricants, and coatings are assessed by using different exam and analytical techniques, such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.

These studies will contribute to assess the conservation state and to the musealisation process of the VMGF, with scientific-based knowledge on the industry history and technological development.

The promotion of Industrial Heritage in the Municipality of Seixal will add value to the local industrial past, enhancing the residents’ identity and encouraging the localisation in an increasingly globalised world.

IH4Future project aims at accomplishing four main goals:

-Raise awareness to Industrial Heritage (IH), its importance in the history of industrial civilisation and the urgency of its preservation;
-Contribute to the historical and technical documentation of IH with scientific-based knowledge and use it as a valuable tool for its preservation;
-Derive scientifically based information to end users (conservation-restauration companies and museums);
-Stimulate the integration of the VMGF in the surrounding community, promote IH Tourism as well as scientific and technological culture and heritage education
