Across the world, Universities are tuning to the challenge of not only providing high quality education for tomorrow’s workforce, research and development to enhance knowledge, but also imparting the entrepreneurship skills vital for the empowering students to create their own startups. Entrepreneurial activity within the University is being seen as a key indicator of the University’s Ranking. A dynamic and vibrant entrepreneurial culture creates students that are confident to face the new economy which is based on niche, nimble and agile startups.


Workshop Objective:

We at UNIDEMI, Research Unit of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in collaboration with other research units and departments in the faculty are organising a workshop on "Bringing Entrepreneurship to the University". The workshop will be held in our University Campus at Faculdade de Ciencias e Technologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. It will be targeted primarily to Researchers, Educators and University Professors, and Students.

Christopher Haley (NESTA)

Chris leads Nesta’s research work on how startups and new technologies can drive economic growth, and what this means for businesses, intermediaries and for the government. Prior to joining Nesta, Chris worked for several years at Imperial Innovations, the technology commercialisation and investment company of Imperial College London. His role there was focussed on assessing emerging technologies and early stage investment opportunities. Following this, he spent two years within Imperial College itself, developing and managing the institution's strategy for enterprise, technology transfer and translation.

Leadership in Marketing, Sales, Strategy and Intelligence at global level. Creator of Social Market Intelligence (SMINT), Chairman SCIP Portugal, Business Partner | Global Competitive Intelligence Practice Lead of OgilvyRED, and Associate Scholar in University Masters at global internationally.


Ray Walshe (School of Computing, Dublin City University)

Ray is a Science Foundation Ireland Funded Investigator in Insight National Centre for Data Analytics @ DCU and Enterprise Ireland Principal Investigator on a number of projects including Hybrid Cloud Computing, Cloud Architecture, High Performance Computing and Big Data. He is the Lead Editor on the ISO Standard for Big Data Reference
Architecture Cloud Standards (ISO JTC1 WG9) and National Standards Authority of Ireland Committee Member for Cloud Computing and Distributed Platforms (ISO JTC1 SC38). He is currently Chief Architect @  Performance Tracking Solutions and at

Micael Gustaffson 
Micael is the managing director of Clusterland Sweden a new networking organisation working in the crossfield between traditional cluster organizations and private business developers. The organization work with regionsand governments in order to improve innovation systems and regional growth but also with internationalisation, funding and business development for start ups and SMEs.
Igor Tasic (Startup Scaleup Project)
Igor is the CEO  of the Startup Europe Week, an European Commission endorsed initiative that aims to unite European regions to help entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses. He is also the co-founder and CEO of, an e-commerce of gourmet Spanish food. Finally, Igor is an active startup advisor and seed investor. Previously, Igor co-founded two other companies in Europe and Latin America and prior to that he was a strategy consultant and executive having worked in 4 continents in a wide range of sectors.
Joana Vieira (LineHealth)
Joana holds a “Product Design” degree from the University of Lisbon. Her first job was developing and patenting innovative technological products, having worked on over 40 patents. She designed everything from technology to furniture and lamps, and saw one of her creations featured in the cover of “Luxus Wohnen” magazine as “Best of 2014”. She was a speaker at Geek Girls Carrots Portugal in May 2014. Joana has experience as a photographer, illustrator and musician, and founded several artistic and cultural projects. Joana is known for being extremely organized and detail focused. She is also, by far, the best cook and the best “handywoman” of the whole team.

Inês is a 26-year old entrepreneur who has been globally recognised for her work as a startup accelerator and community builder. Inês is the co-founder of multiple successful startup initiatives, including Startup Pirates and

My name is Isabel and I am a Finalist in Industrial Engineering Master's at NOVA University of Lisbon. Co-founder and vice-president of Industrial Engineering Students Association (NEGI), I am also responsible for Communication and Image. In this association, we organize many events and activities for students, helping them throughout their academic journey. In our university's enterpreneurship contest, my team won the 2nd place, with the HBand project, so we stayed six months in a business incubator, Madan Parque. Last year I went to Germany as an Erasmus+ Student during one semester, in Emden. In my free time I am a hostess for several international events, where I comunicate a lot with people all over the world, and also save money to travel with friends!

Max Ditzel
Max joined WhatAVenture as Project Manager Open Innovation, where he is responsible for the Innovation Platform that guides business ideas to success. Startups as well as Corporate Innovation Teams are able to follow a clear step by step process that enables them to develop ideas in a lean and market driven way. During his studies he established an international recruitment service for Startups in Austria. Afterwards went on to lead the Talent Development Department at a student initiative - being responsible for the personal and professional development of more than 200 people. During this time he already was supporting several Startups in the field of business development. His current projects range from acceleration workshops to international investment readiness programs for more than 150 teams.
